Job Description

The Organist/Worship Coordinator is to coordinate, lead, and develop the overall music ministry of American Lutheran Church. The responsibilities of this position are many and varied, and include serving as the primary organist of the church. American Lutheran Church’s organ is a Casavant Freres, 3-manual, 55 ranks, 41 independent stops with electro-pneumatic action. Installed in 2001, it is arguably the finest pipe organ in the Valley.


Responsibilities include:

Is the primary organist for church services and functions, including holidays and special services. Is responsible to arrange/ensure substitute coverage when necessary.

  • The Organist/Worship Coordinator must work closely and collaborate with the Senior Pastor (or occasionally other clergy), Choir Director, and the Worship & Music Committee to plan worship services and music in accordance with the Augsburg Sundays and Seasons, Celebrate, and the Common Lectionary
  • Selects, prepares, and provides the organ/piano music for all weekly (Saturday and Sunday) and other services of the church. Works with the Communications/Media Specialist, audio/visual technicians, and the Choir Director to assure accuracy in the production of worship bulletins and slides.
  • Accompanies the Celebration Choir, and special music and/or guest musicians as needed
  • Facilitates the Worship & Music Committee, with representation from the Altar Guild, ushers, readers, greeters, and communion assistants. Coordinates ongoing training and support as needed.
  • Coordinates guest musicians to support worship services as appropriate
  • Manages or oversees special events inside the Sanctuary. Consults with families and clergy regarding weddings, funerals, and other possible special services.
  • Develops and manages the annual budget for the Music Department. Approves depart-ment expenses in accordance with Church Council procedures.
  • Provides financial updates and such reports as the Senior Pastor or Church Council may direct or request
  • Attends regular staff and committee meetings as requested
  • Ensures proper maintenance of church musical instruments, schedules regular tuning and any necessary repairs of the organ and pianos
  • Monitors any contracts affecting the Music Department and ensures that their provisions are observed


General Qualifications

Be a practicing member of a Christian church, and exhibit a positive attitude toward his/her work and the mission of the church

  • Be an accomplished organist and pianist
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Be flexible in adapting to changing situations
  • Work effectively as a team leader and a team member
  • Possess superior organizational skills


Specific Qualifications

Minimum of a Bachelor of Music degree (emphasis on organ preferred, church music)

  • Skill and competency at the organ and piano, sufficient to play hymns, liturgy, and anthem accompaniments at sight
  • Should have a knowledge of and experience with liturgical services and the Common Lectionary as they relate to as they relate to worship planning
  • Understand the uniqueness of a senior congregation and the seasonal fluctuation of attendance
  • Minimum of three year’s relevant experience, preferably five or more

· Computer literate in MS Office Suite, plus a music software program such as Finale, Sibelius, or similar


Supervision of Staff

The Organist/Worship Coordinator will be responsible for guiding and assignment of tasks as well as the development and performance reviews of the following:

  • Choir Director
  • Christo Bells conductor
  • Accompanists
  • Technicians and others as directed


Schedule & Hours

The Organist/Worship Coordinator needs to be available twelve months of the year, and is budgeted for 36 hours per week, a full-time status. Due to the nature of this position the schedule must be a flexible one. The ALC Senior Pastor is to ensure that his/her schedule is known and approved.



This Organist/Worship Coordinator reports to and is directly responsible to the ALC Senior Pastor, and works under the general policies and directives established by the Church Council. This position’s performance reviews will be conducted by the Senior Pastor, initially at thirty days of employment, before the end of the staff member’s first ninety days of employment, and on an annual basis on or near the employment anniversary date thereafter.

This position must also:

  • Understand and support the mission of American Lutheran Church.
  • Support all areas of ministry as well as laity in the areas defined.
  • Perform tasks from time to time that may not be specified above in support of the goals of the church or ministries.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks or duties in support of the daily operation of the church.


Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $65,000.00 to $67,000.00 /year
